[mario 3 underwater crazy theme]

kind of interesting

Yes, the drums are a little different. Could be a good thing. Somewhat a funny piece. The song doesn't seem to take itself very seriously, which made me smile during most of the piece. Simplistic, yet effective. A little short, but that may be the theme's fault that it is based off of.

the arps are well done

good trance saw use. can't deny that. i think you're pushing the distortion barrier with all the low end in this one...it sounds loud at the expense of any sense of dynamics. The song would be a ridiculous amount better if mixed well under the 0 db digital limit and them only compressed and limited slightly to lop of undetectable peaks. As it is...I can already tell that the waveform is going to look like a continuous set of square waves if opened in an audio editor. on top of this, the psychological compression algorithm used in mp3 encoding already causes a 0 db limited song to clip due to compression artifacts.

sense of melody is great though. and the ending was nice. the raw talent is there...it just needs some refinement. in fact i think some of arp use is extraordinary, so that should be commended.

i have to hand to you...the little loops are anything but cliche. a welcome breath of fresh air. I enjoy the clip that sounds a little like an electric piano. unique to say the least. really pretty catchy (IMO).

I can just see this as some hilarious part in like an invader zim scene or something...too bad it's so mono. absolutely gut-busting funny though. oh geez. some people are almost too creative.

it's not exactly modest,

but then that's just the nature of rap music i guess. hard to find clean stuff these days at all unless they're Christian based rappers.

aside from the expletives, the lyrics and musicality are surprisingly decent. Kudos to the pizzicato strings, nice touch.

if this is the first song you've ever made

then good work. it shows you can pick things up quickly. Drums really aren't bad. Synths will likely get "fatter" as you master techniques of layering, synthesis/sample and synth programming, and fx routing (parallel, modular, insert and otherwise). Synthesis and even techno can become such a deep field to the people who really investigate it that it might seem overwhelming. Maybe you'll get to the point one-day where you can code your own synths (difficult task to do it right, to be sure) and you'll no longer need to rely on other people's inspiration for virtual instrument ideas.

whichever path you might take, just make sure to try new things and invest in the best possible monitoring environment you can (behringer truths would be a good start unless you've already got a better pair or mix with headphones). always remember that there is a better way to do things.

funny, because I linked over here after seeing Swolfx had favorited one of my songs. Then I saw the only other selected favorite she had was this one. Now I can see why. I'm really pretty truly impressed by your 'portfolio'. You're 18? And you're this prolific? You've got an amazingly good sense of harmony as evidenced by this piece alone and I would venture to say that you probably play piano (at least, most people can't just "MIDI" their way through a piano and epiano melody like that). I would also venture to guess that you probably want to make a career of either scoring films or writing video game music...because most of your music is basically perfectly suited for it and it'd be foolish to think that you didn't have a very good shot at making it a career.

Good luck in your ventures. I encourage you to keep composing (and especially to remain as prolific as you currently are - the more practice you get, the easier things start to come). So I'm curious though...what do you use as a DAW (do you have multiple?). What are your vst instruments of choice? Controllers? Monitoring setup? Hardware? Audio Interface(s)? I'm rather interested in what your setup is like.

I made this with the factory presets in Reason 3.0, and Im using the program stand alone right now. Although once I become more knowledgeable in Ableton(it came with my M-Audio midi controller) I plan on syncing the two programs up, cuz I heard they work really well together.

There are some parts where the harmony is perfect and just so sweet...and then a few parts where it could be more defined. But the parts that really catch are so good that I can look past it.

i thought it started to pick @ 1:25 with the marcato strings. classy. the compression artifacts start to show themselves at that point to small degree, but nothing excessive. Overall, the piece was satisfyingly dynamic for a trance piece of this nature. good work.
